Internship
Profiles:
Kristen Wilmer
 Kristen
Wilmer graduated with a degree in Biology from Williams College
in May 2004. Prior to the internship, Kristen had worked as a
farm apprentice in an Americorp program where she had focused
on management of cattle, pigs, chickens, and sheep. She had also
participated in study abroad programs that examined the intersection
of environmental and social justice issues related to agriculture
in England, India, Philippines, New Zealand, and Mexico.
Her
interest in the Agroecology On-Farm Internship was to have
an opportunity “to further build my experiences and increase
my own ability to contribute constructively to sustainable agriculture
in the Northeast.” Kristen wants to pursue a graduate degree,
and have a career in organic vegetable farming, research and/or
extension. “I feel that both a strong background in research
and a firm understanding of the practical and economic realities
of farming will be essential to my ability to help develop and
implement appropriate and viable alternatives to conventional
agriculture.”
Kristen worked at the
Kretschmann Farm. In cooperation with Annekathrin Vogel she conducted
two research
projects: i) to evaluate practices
for controlling white mold on rosemary, and ii) to describe
the organic apple orchard insect population dynamics.
